LIVING WITH DIABETES AND GOURMET MEALS

In January 2001, I was diagnosed as diabetic and hospitalised for a week, during which time, the riot act was read to me umpteen times and the odd dietician provided good advice. However, I did not want to live on a lettuce leaf for the rest of my life. (Not totally true but that’s the way it came over – you probably have experienced the type: only six stone soaking wet and full of good advice.) However, the love of good food and booze probably did contribute to my problem!

Upon leaving hospital, I left for a few days recuperation in Brittany having been to the local diabetic centre and to several bookshops beforehand, to acquire as much as I could on the problems surrounding diabetes. After this short recuperation period and now being armed with what knowledge I had digested regarding diabetes, I returned to the UK to set about living what I would call a normal life for a “diabetic”, but as close as possible to what my life was before being diagnosed (oddly enough, because I enjoyed it even after 59 years of good abuse).

The conclusion I reached was: exercise is very important and essential and maintaining a sensible weight, but also is the right food and the right amount. The food, from my point of view, should be interesting and exciting as well as satisfying its fundamental purpose.

Following many visits to supermarkets, delicatessens, health food and specialist shops etc., I was hopelessly appalled and dismayed to find what was available and good in the food line. Fortunately I had access, through an old business colleague, to three chefs at a place called the Food Factory in Dorset. Therefore, I decided not to write a book on exercise but to work with the three research chefs with the aim to produce “Gourmet Meals” that are suitable for diabetics. Part of the research has been to remove/reduce the obvious, such as: sugar, fat, salt and include fibre and ingredients with a slow and low effect on blood sugar levels etc. and to remove the hunger pains. By and large, our research has been fundamentally based on a low/balanced Glycaemic Index (the GI factor)*.

The result of this work is a wide range of pre-prepared meals suitable for diabetics titled: GI Meals.

All of these meals I have personally tested and recommend and are a significant improvement on what was available before. They are designed by the three chefs and prepared and handcrafted individually under their supervision by the Food Factory using fresh ingredients etc. They are without doubt a step towards the wonderful experiences of eating I enjoyed before I was diagnosed.

* The Glycaemic Index (or GI factor as we have called it) is a ranking of foods from 0 to 100 that tells us whether a food will raise blood sugar levels dramatically, moderately, or just a little.

GI
Coming soon, we have a wide and varied range of pre-prepared, microwaveable meals, suitable for the GI diet.

These meals contain ingredients with a low GI (glycaemic index) making the blood sugar rise and fall gently, rather than high GI foods, which cause rapid rise and fall of blood sugar levels.

They are low in fat and salt and ideal for diabetics.

These dishes are presently undergoing micro-biological tests and shelf life tests and will be available very soon, in the mean time could you leave your email address and we will get back to you.
